Hu Zi, once alone, seemed to take a cautious approach to life. At three and a h alf, he began to haunt mating sites, small areas of forest scent-marked by fema les in estrus. Here Hu Zi watches from a tree as the female Mo-Mo waits for mal es to appear; several mated with her. A year later Hu Zi fought another young male over breed ing rites, lost, and was badly injured. Though now sexually mature, he has stil l not mated.
